The lotus is symbolic for purity, rebirth and strength. The lotus rises from the mud without stains, they are often viewed as a symbol of purity.
As many of Sal da Terra close friends witnessed, know and understood. Sal spent many years (decades) bed-ridden and immobile, unable to walk more than five to ten steps at a time. It is only now, that Sal has regained a new vitality and is on her way to reclaiming her strength.
Thus, the lotus is the flower that symbolizes her determination, faith, joy and reverence for living.
